The port town of Yarmouth, with its 30-minute ferry link to Lymington on the
mainland, is packed with maritime history. The town was sacked by the French
in 1377 and 1524 and King Henry VIII built Yarmouth castle as a coastal
defence in 1547. The unique 700ft long timber pier underwent extensive
restoration helped by public support. Each of the 522 deck planks bears the
name of the person who helped pay for it.

Situated on the estuary of the western river Yar, picturesque Yarmouth harbour
has berthing and on-shore facilities for visiting yachtsmen. Walkers, cyclists and
bird-watchers enjoy the riverside trails. The Yarmouth to Freshwater causeway
follows the route of the old railway line. There are excellent
shops, restaurants and traditional pubs..

West Wight has many areas of outstanding natural beauty.
Rolling countryside, peaceful forests and picturesque
villages. There are breathtaking views of rugged white cliffs
at Freshwater, multicoloured cliffs at Alum Bay and of course
the famous Needles rocks
.
